Project type
Documentary Photography
Date
October 2022
Location
Delos, Greece
Photographing the abandoned island of Delos in Greece is a profoundly atmospheric and historically enriching experience. Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most significant archaeological locations in the Greek islands, once considered the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. This tiny island offers a treasure trove of ancient ruins, including temples, markets, and residential areas, all frozen in time.
A photography session here is like stepping back into the echoes of ancient civilization. The island's terrain is rugged and arid, with landscapes that shift from sandy beaches to rocky hills dotted with sparse vegetation. Photographers are drawn to the stark beauty of the marble ruins, the intricate mosaics, and the iconic rows of lion statues that stand guard over the sacred lake, now dry. The natural light plays a significant role in the imagery, with the intense Mediterranean sun casting deep shadows and creating dramatic contrasts during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset.
Capturing the essence of Delos involves not only focusing on the grand scale of its archaeological sites but also paying attention to the subtle details: a fragment of an ancient column, wildflowers growing among stones, and the panoramic views of the surrounding Aegean Sea. The isolation and the absence of permanent residents preserve its mystical aura, making it a captivating subject for photographers interested in history, mythology, and the enduring allure of ancient Greece.
Enjoy the memorable experience I had with friends Greta and Jess; along with the cute cat we met along the way <3
